Founded in 2004 by drummer Peter Burkes, the band’s first home was the Crown pub in Shrawley. Thus the Crown Phoenix Big Band was born.
These days the band is comprised of keen amateurs and semi-professionals. We have a friendly, informal and relaxed feel. Rehearsals are as important to us as gigs – this is something we do for fun, and we hope that comes across to the audiences we play for. We like a variety of music, including tunes from big names like Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Some great composers and arrangers – such as Sammy Nestico and Quincy Jones – also feature in our set lists, as do big band arrangements of more modern jazz and rock tunes.
In traditional big band style, we boast four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, piano, bass, guitar and drums. We’re often joined by our alluring vocalist Julie Knight. We play a mixture of open and private gigs, and are available to hire for dances, weddings, charity fund-raisers and other events throughout Worcestershire and the surrounding area. Please e-mail us if you’re interested in booking the band, or visit our Facebook page for upcoming events and where to buy tickets.
